Exclude RAM above 1088KB
To EXCLUDE RAM ABOVE 1088KB:
1) Restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
2) Press 'F8' when the message 'Starting Windows 95' appears.
3) In the 'Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Menu', select 'Command Prompt only'. (The 'C:\>' prompt appears.)
4) Edit 'CONFIG.SYS':
a) Type the following at the DOS prompt, and press ENTER:
EDIT.COM
b) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Open...'. (The 'Open' dialog box appears.)
c) Select 'CONFIG.SYS' in the 'Files' list box, and click 'OK'. (The 'CONFIG.SYS' file appears in the editor window.)
d) Type the following at the end of CONFIG.SYS:
DEVICE=<PATH>\HIMEM.SYS /INT15=<X>
(where <PATH> is the location of 'HIMEM.SYS' and <X> is the amount of memory above High Memory to exclude from Windows 95 use.)
EXAMPLE: To exclude 4MB of RAM from Windows 95, type
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /INT15=4096.
5) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save'.
6) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit'.
7) Restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
8) If the random errors no longer occur:
a) Repeat steps 1) through 4)c).
b) Reduce the amount of RAM excluded from Windows 95, by the size of your memory chip.
EXAMPLE: If you have 1MB memory chips, reduce the size by 1024KB. If you have 2MB memory chips, reduce the size by 2048KB.
c) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Save'.
d) Select the 'File' menu and select 'Exit'.
e) Restart the computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
9) Repeat step 8) until the random errors return. The bad RAM is in the area that you just made available to the system.
10) If the random errors still occur, contact next-level technical support.
